Tip #27 – Use a weighted blanket to sleep better

A good night of restful sleep is critical to physical, mental and emotional health.  Many of us really struggle to go to bed at a reasonable time, fall asleep and STAY asleep for a full night of rest.

Weighted blankets are surging in popularity and people who struggle with sleep are singing the praises.  So what is a weighted blanket?  A weighted blanket is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a blanket with extra weight in it.  Most commonly, weighted blanket contain glass beads or plastic pellets to give them extra weight.  The blankets come in different weights and the rule of thumb for choosing one for yourself is to buy one that is about 10% of your bodyweight.

So why should you use one?  Weighted blankets apply gentle pressure to the body which can help release serotonin (the chemical in your body that helps you relax.)  They can also help to reduce anxiety – the weight of the blanket feels like a hug – a sensation that makes you feel more secure.  Weighted blankets also make it harder for you to toss and turn and interrupt your sleep.
