Set yourself up to get GREAT sleep.
Sleeping – for some of us – can be very elusive. How can something so simple be so challenging?! Sometimes we just need to help our bodies remember how to slow down, unwind, unplug and get into sleep mode. With some information, change of habits and not taking yourself so seriously, we can train our bodies to get better sleep. I used to get so worked up about making sure I got enough sleep that it was actually making it worse! Once I started to lighten up and just roll with the punches, it got better, but there are some practical tips to incorporate into your bedtime regime that help with better sleep.
Those of us who have struggled to sleep regularly will probably have heard of trying things like keeping the temperature of the room at between 60 and 67 degrees, making your environment as dark as possible, and reducing sounds. (I wear a sleep mask and ear plugs every night and its improved my sleep tremendously) Many of the other tips in this 30 day series will also help set you up for a good night’s sleep. Eating well and not eating too late let your body rest more comfortably. Making sure you enjoy movement and activity every day naturally brings about the desire to rest.
There are times when I do all the ‘right’ things, but yet I still can’t sleep well. This is when I love yoga nidra. It’s a wonderful guided meditation that cultivates awareness of body, mind, and spirit. For those of us who have a hard time “turning off” at night, tuning IN is a beautiful and effective way to quiet the mind by focusing on the yoga or meditation teacher’s words as they guide you (and your overactive mind) to a place of peace. But beware – a common complaint is that people fall asleep before the end. Want to try it? Here is a 20 minute yoga nidra you can listen to tonight!
