Summer is rolling along nicely and there is a LOT of summer left despite my kids bemoaning that its ‘almost over’. My husband and I took the kids camping and currently my 12 year old is spending the week on Cape Cod with one of her besties. (Lucky!) The best thing about summer is that we are outside all the time. However, this means more bumps, bruises, burns, bug bites and other bummers. We have compiled a list of our favorite family friendly products to protect, soothe and keep you comfortable and feeling your best this summer.
#10 – California Baby Non-Talc Powder – This one is a GAME CHANGER that I just learned this summer. I don’t know how I’ve made it through 42 years of life without knowing that you can use powder to remove sand off your body (especially out of the cracks and crevices if-you-know-what-i-mean) after a day at the beach! The powder absorbs the moisture that is helping the sand stick to your skin and voila! Its slides right off. Brilliant.
#9 – PiperWai Activated Charcoal Deodorant – Laura and I met the PiperWai people (who were on Shark Tank with this product) at a health and wellness summit we attended in Boston. They gave us samples and we both ended up buying (and now using) the deodorant. YES it actually works AND it smells soooooooo good.
#8 – Boiron Cocculus Indicus Homeopathic Motion Sickness Relief – Both my daughter and I get motion sickness. Whale watch – yup. Amusement parks – yup. Road trips – yup. This stuff actually, really, truly does help! I keep one in my purse and one in my car.
#7 – Ruby’s Lube – Listen, it’s not what you think. This all natural, anti-chafe/anti-blister balm will be your best friend if you (like me) are susceptible to “chub rub” (think hot day at an amusement park, walking all day in a skirt….OUCH.) Also great for runners and other athletes prone to chafing and blisters. This one has good stuff like olive oil, calendula, beeswax and lemongrass.
#6 – Boiron Arnica Gel – If you have been in our office, chances are you already know that we love this stuff. Summer activities lead to lots of bumps and bruises and sore muscles from extra activity like bike riding, kayaking, gardening, etc. Arnica helps soothe relieve sore muscles and reduce pain, swelling and bruising. This is a must for the medicine cabinet year round!
#5 – Momin Organic Soothing Ointment – If you DO get some itchy bites, this stuff is great to have on hand. Mosquitos LOVE my daughter and if anyone is getting bit it is her. She then ends up practically scratching her skin off. This stuff stops the itch so the bites can heal.
#4 – Murphy’s Naturals Lemon Eucalyptus Natural Insect Repellent – Speaking of the Environmental Working group, they (along with the CDC) recommend Lemon Eucalyptus oil as an effective alternative to DEET for people 3 years and older. This stuff smells a heckuva a lot better than most commercial bug sprays and is plant based, petroleum & toxin free. “Good for the family and good for the environment” as Murphy’s says.
#3 – Sol-Aid Recover Sunburn Treatment – My husband and son tan but my daughter and I go straight to pink or red if we miss a sunblock application. With soothing plant derived ingredients like apple cider vinegar to neutralize inflammation, lavender essential oil and arnica to reduce pain and chamomile to soothe, this one is NICE. If I’m burned, I like something I can spray on instead of trying to smear or dab a cream or gel. Hot tip: keep it in the fridge!
#2 – thinksport SPF 50 Sunscreen – Every spring, I reach out to my friend Tracey who specializes in healthy skin to ask “So what’s the best sunscreen to use on my family this year?” For the last two years in a row she has recommended this sunscreen. She is not alone, the EWG also lists thinksport as one of their top rated sunscreens and reports that poses a low health concern. thinksport does not use nano (ultra small) zinc oxide or aerosol spray both of which are of high concern for health. I love that it is water resistant for up to 80 minutes!
#1 – Hydroflask – Hydration is key to feeling your absolute best all summer long. This bottle is THE BEST we’ve ever tried. Keeps ice water icy cold for 24 hours without condensation on the outside. Hydroflask will transition nicely into fall by keeping hot beverages hot for about 6. Lots of sizes and lids to choose from.
Happy Summer! Remember, there is still lots of summer left!!
