Therapeutic Massage

Massage work which focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue to dissolve adhesions, free impingements, reduce scar tissue and restore normal function and tone. Techniques are used to affect the sub-layer of musculature and fascia.

This type of work is ideal for athletes in training or recovering from an event.  Deep tissue massage is also excellent after injuries, overuse and for those who work long hours in the same position.

Deep tissue massage can be very effective in addressing sciatica; TMJ; carpal tunnel syndrome; knee pain; back, neck and shoulder pain and other conditions that cause pain and interfere with normal function and quality of life.

With deep tissue massage you will enjoy improved posture and more fluid movement…and it feels great, too!

Depending on your therapist’s training, multiple modalities and techniques may be included in a deep tissue massage at Well Within.  A session may include:

Myofascial Release
Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT)
Muscular Therapy
Thermotherapy/Cryotherapy (the use of heat/cold applications)

Orthopedic Massage

Orthopedic Massage is purposeful bodywork meant to bring functional balance to the fascial and musculoskeletal system. In balancing these support and loco-motor systems, the orthopedic massage therapist will reduce effects of mechanical forces responsible for chronic pain and tissue disruption.

Orthopedic Massage sessions will include physical assessments such as postural analysis, range of motion testing and/or other special orthopedic tests as well as palpation of tissues. Once the orthopedic massage therapist has a good picture of the clients presentation and a treatment plan has been determined the client will receive bodywork to promote functional balance with the intention of addressing the root causes of pain and dysfunction, thus eliminating the symptoms.

Please call to schedule an appointment with one of our Orthopedic Massage therapists.  These sessions are not available for scheduling online.

Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage is both safe and beneficial for women throughout their entire pregnancies. It is important to take good care of yourself during your pregnancy to get the best chance for a healthy birth and baby. Eating well, staying active and supporting your body’s health are all great ways to ensure a fulfilling and positive experience. Prenatal massage not only feels wonderful, but has many benefits, as well:

  • increased blood flow to baby
  • decrease in stress/anxiety
  • decreasing discomfort in neck, back, hips, legs and feet
  • decreasing normal levels of swelling in ankles and legs

There is no danger in getting a massage during your first, second or third trimesters as long as you are experiencing a normal pregnancy with no major complications. Our massage therapists are trained in technique, positioning and contraindications. There are certain areas of the body where deep tissue massage is contraindicated during pregnancy. Those areas are the posterior legs and the upper trapezius muscles (tops of shoulders). Your therapist may massage these areas with firm pressure, but will not use deep tissue techniques in these areas.

You should reschedule your massage if you are experiencing the following symptoms:

  • nausea
  • fever
  • bleeding
  • cramping
  • sudden swelling

Thai Massage

Thai Massage as it is practiced today is a blend of Indian, Chinese and Thai traditions going back over 2,000 years. This centuries-old technique is performed on a thick mat on the floor while the client wears comfortable, loose clothing. No oils or lotions are used and the focus is on stretching and range of motion. The therapist uses hands, forearms, elbows, knees and feet to apply pressure and stimulate the sen lines, which are similar to Chinese meridians or Ayurvedic nadis. The therapist will also move the client into poses similar to that of yoga to facilitate deep stretching and increase flexibility, leaving the client feeling relaxed, yet alert and agile.

This technique is especially helpful for people who sit for long periods each day; anyone with low back, hip or leg related tension; chronic fatigue and pain conditions; and athletes. This technique is not recommended for pregnant women or those with hyper-mobile joints. To prepare for your appointment please wear or bring loose, comfortable clothes; please, no jeans, shorts or skirts.

Pediatric Massage
Why Pediatric Massage?

Research has shown that massage therapy can ease physical discomforts in the body. Studies conducted by the Touch Research Institute of Miami show that massage can alleviate pain, muscle aches and anxiety in pediatric clients. This therapy also provides relaxation, reduction of stress hormones, increased sleep and better focus.

Pediatric Massage vs. Adult Massage

What is the difference between pediatric massage and adult massage? Children’s bodies are constantly developing throughout ages 0-18 years old. School-aged children have less developed soft tissue, muscle and bones than an adult’s body. A pediatric massage session will be slower paced with shorter sessions. The pressure is lighter to accommodate the growing body and draping is more conservative to ensure trust and respect.

With pediatric massage we can help our child athlete reach their fullest potential. We comfort pains, aid in restful sleep, decrease potential injury and help them focus and relax. When choosing a professional, be sure they are a licensed massage therapist, trained in pediatric massage.

Integrated Cupping
Cupping therapy is a massage therapy technique  in which suction is produced on the skin in order to stimulate blood flow and promote healing.  What makes this technique unique is the reverse massage action.  In traditional therapeutic massage, muscles and tissues are compressed, kneaded, rolled and bent.  Cupping therapy decompresses and gently suctions and lifts tissue to effectively release tight fascia, increase blood circulation, stimulate lymphatic flow, relieve inflammation & muscle and joint pain and more.

When cupping therapy is integrated within a therapeutic massage session, the client will enjoy the benefits of both modalities!
